Cultural attractions are also in plentiful supply. The Duke of Bavaria Tassilo III founded a monastery in the town of Mattsee in 760 – making it Austria’s third oldest. In the 11th century it became a collegiate church, a role it continues to perform to this day. Life in Salzburg’s lake district is shaped by traditional customs such as the annual festival to bless the maypole or the perennially popular lakeside festival. The concerts in the Mattseer Diabellisommer series – named after acclaimed local composer Anton Diabelli – are an unmissable highlight and great alternative to the Salzburg Festival, which is held at the same time. Leave your everyday worries behind and enjoy some precious time out with your loved ones in one of Austria’s prettiest areas. The region’s hotels, pensions and holiday apartments are synonymous with comfort.
